A Japanese Brass and Copper Mounted Black Lacquer And Gilt Wood Butsudan Cabinet Late 19th Century Circa 1880s


Of rectangular form on black lacquered base with three drawers mounted with oval reticulated copper pull with beaded borders centering bail handle over two sliding doors inset with gilt bordered black and gold lacquered landscape decorated panels with mother-of-pearl highlights, the cabinet with two pairs of black lacquered paneled bi-folding doors with chased brass butterfly hinges centering a large circular lock plate with chased lotus decoration, the backs of outer doors gilt within recessed panels bordered by black lacquer, the outer doors opening to two pairs of hinged gilt wood bi-folding doors with rectangular grills at the centers backed by fine wire mesh with gilt painted prunus decoration above a band of black, gold, and mother-of-pearl lacquered landscape panels with chased floral blossom to the backs, the sets of doors opening to an architectural designed cabinet with carved and gilt tripartite domed and galleried arcade framed by gilt back and sides above a three stepped base with black and gold lacquered decoration.
