A personal story follows this announcement:
A lecture at Harrison’s gallery on the history of the Shamrock Hotel by Prof Jeff Lidemann. Thursday, March 29th, 6pm to 8:30. Wine, beer and lite bites.
THE STORY BEGAN on a ‘dark and stormy night’ (just couldn’t pass that one!). Actually a weekend late in May of 1963. I’d just graduated from UT School of Pharmacy and was in Houston to take the exam for licensure to be registered by the State Board of Pharmacy as a practicing pharmacist. My parents were proud of me and had given me a monetary gift that was substantial for the time.
Exam completed, so that night I and my future wife, Annis Marie Minyard, decided to celebrate by having dinner at the famous Shamrock Hotel. Cocktails and dinner, then to the Shamrock’s Cork Club for champagne and the program presented by Milton Berle. (Yes, that Milton Berle!) A lavish night of cocktails, dinner, champagne, a fine performance, and tip – and I received change from the $50 bill I proffered.
